Brian Matherne is the Learning, Engagement, and Development (LEAD) Coordinator at NCSE. He serves as the national liaison between NCSE and the EnvironMentors chapter leaders. Building on his experiences as a mentor and chapter leader at Louisiana State University (LSU), Brian’s goal is to foster inclusive science opportunities for minoritized students. His success with LSU EnvironMentors has been highlighted by the establishment of a Teen Science Café Network program and receiving an Advocate Grant award by the Society for Science and the Public.
Brian has an interdisciplinary background spanning both academic research and environmental consulting. He has worked on projects involving human pathogens, heavy metals, oil spills, air pollution, and other ecological disturbances. As a consultant, Brian received training in air emission modeling, radiation safety, groundwater monitoring, and risk assessment.
Additionally, Brian is completing his doctorate in environmental science at LSU, with a concentration in microbial ecology.
